SK Hynix Develops High-Performance SSD for Data Centers

On September 11, SK Hynix announced the development of its latest high-performance solid-state drive (SSD), the 'PEB110 E1.S,' designed specifically for data centers.

With the rise of AI technology, demand for high-performance storage solutions like NAND flash-based SSDs is rapidly increasing, alongside the need for ultra-fast DRAM products such as HBM. To address this demand, SK Hynix has introduced the PEB110, featuring PCIe Gen5, the fifth-generation PCI Express, which significantly boosts data processing speed and energy efficiency.

Building on its previous success with the PS1010, SK Hynix aims to expand its lineup of SSD products to meet the evolving needs of its global clientele. The company is currently collaborating with data center clients to validate the PEB110, with mass production expected to begin in the second quarter of next year.

The PEB110 utilizes the advanced PCIe Gen5 bandwidth, which doubles the performance of its predecessor, PCIe Gen4, achieving a data transfer rate of 32 GT/s (gigatransfers per second). This enhancement results in a 100% performance boost and a 30% increase in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation.

For the first time, SK Hynix has integrated SPDM (Security Protocols and Data Model) into its data center-targeted SSDs, significantly enhancing security features. SPDM safeguards critical server systems through secure authentication and monitoring, addressing the increasing threat of cyberattacks on data centers. This integration ensures that the PEB110 meets the stringent security requirements of today's data centers.

The PEB110 will be available in three capacity options: 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB, and supports the OCP 2.5 specification to enhance global compatibility.

"This new SSD leverages our industry-leading 238-layer 4D NAND technology, setting a new standard in cost, performance, and quality," said Ahn Hyun, Head of the N-S Committee at SK Hynix. "We are moving forward with customer qualifications and are confident that this product will solidify our position as a global leader in AI storage solutions for data centers."
