TSMC Delays 1.4nm Plant, Prioritizes 2nm Production

TSMC has announced a delay in the construction of its advanced 1.4nm manufacturing plant in the Hsinchu Science Park (Phase 2) in Taiwan. The park's management confirmed on April 29 that TSMC informed them the urgency for Phase 2 land has decreased, leading to a postponement of the planned August land delivery to the end of the year. This adjustment aligns with TSMC's updated timeline. Nevertheless, the technology for the new facility remains consistent, with the focus on producing the most advanced sub-2nm processes.

TSMC will continue working closely with relevant authorities regarding land usage for its plants.

According to an analysis of TSMC's supply chain, the company emphasized strong demand for 2nm technology during its recent North America technology forum. Mass production of the 2nm process is anticipated to begin in 2025, while the recently announced A16 (1.6nm) process is expected to start production in 2026. TSMC aims to prioritize the launch of these two technologies to meet customer demand, making the urgency of 1.4nm production less pressing.

TSMC's Phase 2 development in the Hsinchu Science Park includes four advanced wafer fabrication plants for processes 2nm and below, with an investment of NT$800 billion to NT$1 trillion. The local management agency noted the development area spans 89 hectares and currently involves 107 landowners.
