Infineon introduces high precision coreless current sensor XENSIV? TLE4972 for automotive applications

Munich, Germany, October 27th, 2021 The new XENSIVTM TLE4972 from Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX  /  OTCQX : IFNNY) is the company's first vehicle current sensor. For precise and steady current measurements, the coreless current sensor employs Infineon's well-proven Hall technology. The TLE4972 is suited for xEV applications such as traction inverters used in hybrid and battery-driven vehicles, as well as battery main switches, thanks to its compact design and diagnostic modes.

TLE4972 provides state-of-the-art sensing without the drawbacks of magnetic cores thanks to unique temperature and stress correction. Because of its differential sensing structure, the sensor does not require a core or shield to protect it from stray fields. The sensor's embedded EEPROM allows it to be customized for various applications, and it provides measurement ranges of up to 2 kA.

The sensor features two distinct output pins for overcurrent detection, with a typical response time of less than 1 second, to protect the system. Customers can control the sensitivity and overcurrent limitations, as well as modify the sensor to their own needs. Furthermore, the sensitivity plus offset drift over temperature is less than 1.6 percent.

Due to the magnetic sensing method, the sensor has very low power losses. As a result, it can be employed in 400 V or 800 V battery main switches as a versatile and redundant solution. The PG-small VSON-6's packaging allows for a compact design, making it excellent for traction inverters. A second product option in the form of a PG-TDSO-16 is also available. Both devices were designed as Safety Element out of Context for safety standards up to ASIL B, according to  ISO 26262 .
