Introduction

Xilinx, Inc. is a technology company based in the United States that specializes in programmable logic devices. The field-programmable gate array was invented by the business (FPGA). The semiconductor company was the first to develop a fabless manufacturing model.

Ross Freeman, Bernard Vonderschmitt, and James V Barnett II co-founded the company in 1984, and it went public on the  NASDAQ  in 1989.

AMD to Acquire Xilinx, Creating the Industry's High-Performance Computing Leader

On October 27, 2020, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) and Xilinx (NASDAQ: XLNX) announced that they have reached a definitive agreement for AMD to acquire Xilinx in an all-stock deal valued at $35 billion. The merger will create the industry's most powerful high-performance computing firm, greatly extending AMD's product range and customer base in a variety of emerging industries where Xilinx is already a market leader. The deal is projected to boost AMD's margins, EPS, and free cash flow generation immediately, as well as offer industry-leading growth.

With this transaction, two industry giants with complementary product portfolios and customer bases will join forces. AMD will have the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of high-performance processor technologies, integrating CPUs, GPUs, FPGA  s,  Adaptive SoCs, and deep software experience to enable cloud, edge, and end-device computing platforms. (1) What is Xilinx FPGA?

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are semiconductor devices that are based around a matrix of configurable logic blocks (CLBs) connected via programmable interconnects. FPGAs Xilinx can be reprogrammed to desired application or functionality requirements after manufacturing.

Xilinx FPGAs can run a regular embedded OS (such as Linux or  VxWorks ) and can implement processor peripherals in programmable logic.

(2) What is Xilinx Vivado?

Xilinx's Vivado Design Suite is a software suite for synthesis and analysis of hardware description language (HDL) designs, which replaces Xilinx ISE and adds functionality for the system on chip development and high-level synthesis. Vivado is a complete rewriting and rethinking of the entire design process (compared to ISE).

Vivado includes the in-built logic simulator  ISIM, just like subsequent versions of ISE. With a toolchain that turns C code into programmable circuitry, Vivado also introduces high-level synthesis.

It took 1000 person-years and $200 million to replace the 15-year-old ISE with Vivado Design Suite.

(3) What is Xilinx ISE?

Xilinx ISE (Integrated Synthesis Environment) is a discontinued Xilinx software tool for synthesis and analysis of HDL designs, with a focus on embedded firmware development for Xilinx FPGA  and CPLD IC product families. In-system programming of legacy hardware designs comprising older FPGAs and  CPLDs is still possible with the final released edition from October 2013, which is otherwise orphaned by the new design tool, Vivado Design Suite.

ISE Xilinx allows programmers to synthesize (or "compile") their designs, perform timing analysis, study RTL diagrams, simulate a design's response to various stimuli, and configure the target device with the programmer. The Embedded Development Kit (EDK), Software Development Kit (SDK), and ChipScope Pro are also included with the Xilinx ISE. The Xilinx ISE is used largely for circuit synthesis and design, whereas the ModelSim logic simulator (ISIM) is utilized for system-level testing.
