The Indian government will urge Apple, Samsung and other phone makers to prioritize software upgrades to support local 5G services.
According to reports, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the official launch of 5G at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) on October 1, and India's leading telecom operator Reliance Jio announced on October 5 in Delhi, 5G trials have been launched in Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi, and will expand to all of India in 2023. Its rival Bharti Airtel has also announced 5G coverage across the country by March 2024.
The local Airtel website shows that Apple's iPhone models, including the latest iPhone 14, and many of Samsung's high-end phones are not compatible with India's 5G-enabled software. As a result, senior officials of India's telecom and IT departments will hold a meeting on Wednesday local time to promote 5G services in the country as soon as possible, asking for the participation of executives from Apple, Samsung, vivo and Xiaomi, as well as Indian telecom operators Reliance, Airtel and Vodafone Idea.
With the official announcement of 5G services in New Delhi, industry insiders predict that there will be a new wave of sales in the Indian market. This is especially true for Chinese smartphone makers, which now have about two-thirds of the Indian market and are expected to sell 20 million 5G phones by the end of the year, which is equivalent to adding an extra month of sales to Chinese phone makers Forehead.
