Vietnam's VinFast recalls a third of electric cars sold to replace sensors

Vietnam's VinFast said on Saturday it will recall 730 VF e34 electric vehicles (EVs) sold only in the domestic market for inspections and replacement of side impact sensors, Reuters reported.

VinFast, which started operations in 2019 and is a subsidiary of Vietnam's largest conglomerate Vingroup (VIC.HM), has sold 2,208 electric vehicles since its launch late last year.

"The side-impact sensors of airbag systems equipped with VF e34 models are likely to encounter errors that are not compatible with the airbag controller...and therefore may send incorrect signals to the controller," VinFast said in a statement. said in the statement.

VinFast, which stopped production of gasoline-powered vehicles in August, is gearing up to expand in the U.S. market, hoping to compete with traditional automakers and deliver the first 5,000 all-electric sports utility vehicles in November.

The company has registered nearly 65,000 reservations worldwide and expects to sell 750,000 electric vehicles annually by 2026, starting with the VF8 and VF9 all-electric SUVs.
