Samsung Display: MicroLED will replace OLED for AR devices

A Samsung Display executive said that MicroLED displays could replace OLED displays in augmented reality (AR) devices because of the high brightness required to achieve AR.

According to the Korean media The Elec, Kim Min-woo, general manager of Samsung Display, pointed out at the "MicroLED Display Workshop" industry event held in Yeouido, Seoul, South Korea that achieving AR requires high brightness, which will require the development of new light-emitting diodes, while OLEDs is impossible.

"AR, VR and mixed reality all have different specific needs, AR needs more brightness than VR when interacting with the real world. This also means it needs a lighter and smaller panel." Kim Min-woo said .

According to Kim Min-woo, the minimum requirement for AR displays is 5000ppi, the pixel pitch must be less than 5 microns, the three sub-pixels of red, green and blue must be less than 3 microns, and the LED chips must also be equal to or less than 10 microns.
