U.S. chipmakers AMD and ADI announced on November 17 local time that the two parties had reached a settlement on their previous legal dispute over semiconductor patents.
AMD and ADI have settled all ongoing patent litigation on mutually agreed terms, according to Reuters. As part of this resolution, the two companies committed to a technical collaboration to bring next-generation solutions to their communications and data center customers.
It is reported that ADI filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Xilinx (now a subsidiary of AMD) in the District Court of Delaware in the United States in December 2019, mainly targeting Xilinx's unauthorized use of at least two high-end Zynq Eight key patents on ADI's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) technology are used in UltraScale+ RFSoC products. ADI seeks damages and requests that Xilinx be prohibited from selling any products that infringe its patents.
In February of this year, AMD completed the acquisition of Xilinx. Xilinx is the world's leading FPGA manufacturer. According to data from the State Administration for Market Regulation, in 2020, Xilinx's FPGA market share both globally and in China exceeds 50%, ranking first. After AMD acquires Xilinx, it can make up for the shortcomings and quickly enter the FPGA market, becoming the only manufacturer in the world that can provide CPU, GPU and FPGA products at the same time.
