TSMC's 1nm factory will land in Longtan

According to the Economic Daily, Shen Rongjin, a spokesman for Taiwan’s administrative department, recently stated that TSMC’s new 1nm plant will be located in Longtan, Taoyuan, which is the best choice for the development of advanced manufacturing processes.

The administrative department of Taiwan, China recently announced the launch of the third-phase plan of Longtan Science Park, and the industry has reported that TSMC will set up a 1-nanometer factory here. Shen Rongjin said that at present, Hsinchu is the base camp of TSMC's R&D center, and the 1nm advanced process should be closer to the R&D base.

Shen Rongjin said that the current advanced process technology of Taiwan's semiconductor industry is 3 nanometers. If it is to advance to 1 nanometer, it needs to be accelerated. The 1-nanometer R&D process is not only an important key technology for semiconductors, but also a key technology for Taiwan's semiconductor industry in the world. One of the "weapons" to gain a firm foothold, so it must be deployed in advance.

TSMC actively develops advanced process technologies and expands mature process capacity. The capacity utilization rate of TSMC’s 7nm process has loosened in the fourth quarter. The construction time of the 7nm plant in Kaohsiung has been temporarily postponed, and the 28nm plant is still on schedule. It is reported that the Kaohsiung plant has officially started construction and will start mass production in 2024 as planned.

In addition, Zhang Zhongmou, the founder of TSMC, said that he would not rule out moving some advanced production capacity to the United States for production, and it is also possible to transfer 3nm to regions outside Taiwan, such as the United States. In response, TSMC responded that there is no further news at present.
