TSMC Wei Zhejia: Consider building a new plant in Europe and Japan, and the plan for mass production of 2nm in 2025 remains unchanged

TSMC held a legal briefing on the 12th. During the questioning session, TSMC CEO Wei Zhejia said that the company is considering building a second factory in Japan and building an automotive chip factory in Europe, and plans to mass produce 2nm chips in 2025.

In December last year, it was reported that TSMC was negotiating with suppliers on the first European factory and planned to build its first potential European factory in Dresden, Germany.

Regarding TSMC's 2nm plan, Jiwei previously reported that Fujitsu announced in November that it would design its own 2nm chip and plan to entrust it to TSMC as an OEM. The goal is to apply this product to energy-saving CPUs in 2026.

TSMC officially announced the 2nm process in June this year, indicating that under the same power consumption, the speed of 2nm is 10-15% faster than that of the 3nm process; under the same speed, the power consumption is reduced by 25-30%. TSMC CEO Wei Zhejia revealed at the time that the 2nm process is progressing smoothly, but their current plan is still to mass produce in 2025.

It is reported that TSMC announced its fourth-quarter financial report before the meeting. The company's revenue in the fourth quarter of last year was NT$625.53 billion (about US$19.93 billion). Gross profit rate exceeded expectations and reached 62.2%, operating profit rate was 52.0%, and both gross profit rate and operating profit rate reached new highs.
