Samsung Electronics will resume the development of central processing unit (CPU) cores and enter the competition of developing cutting-edge chips for smartphones and personal computers (PCs). Samsung plans to reduce its dependence on ARM and use its own designed CPUs in smartphones, tablets, and laptops to compete with Apple.
According to Business Korea, Samsung recently formed an internal team for CPU core development and hired former AMD senior developer Rahul Tuli to lead the team. Industry insiders said, "If the development process goes smoothly, Samsung will use its own developed CPU before 2027."
Samsung has always relied on the British company ARM to provide CPU cores for its Exynos application processors (APs), and this is not the first time Samsung has attempted to develop its own CPUs. Since the early 2010s, the company has been building its own development team and investing in technology to establish its own design capabilities.
However, Samsung's mobile CPU cores have been criticized for their power efficiency, heat efficiency, and multi-core efficiency, and therefore Samsung eventually deemed the product non-competitive and discontinued CPU development. In 2019, Samsung officially canceled the project and dismissed more than 300 researchers from its Samsung Austin Research Center.
