Samsung Electronics has developed a groundbreaking new generation of DRAM products that significantly expand capacity and bandwidth.
The newly launched product, the industry's first 128GB CXL (Compute Express Link) 2.0 DRAM, supports the latest CXL technology. Building upon last year's achievement of developing CXL DRAM based on CXL 1.1, Samsung has released an upgraded version, ushering in a new era of commercialization for next-generation memory.
CXL serves as a medium for more efficient utilization of central processing units (CPUs), accelerators, and DRAM in high-performance servers. CXL DRAM, with its ability to synergize with mainstream DRAM, offers expanded bandwidth and capacity, making it highly sought after in emerging markets such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). In the cutting-edge technology industry, there is a continuous demand for increased storage capacity and data processing speed, necessitating performance improvements beyond current memory capabilities.
Notably, this product marks the industry's first implementation of storage pooling functionality. This technology enables bundling of multiple CXL memories on a server, allowing users to allocate memory in batches according to their needs. Samsung explains that this approach ensures optimal utilization of CXL memory without any idle areas.
It can now look forward to offering Samsung's new generation DRAM products, which provide expanded capacity, improved bandwidth, and advanced features like storage pooling, catering to the ever-increasing demands of the AI and ML market.
