JDI's JDIDD Acquires JOLED's OLED Tech for 1 Billion Yen

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) announced on May 30th that its subsidiary, JDIDD, will invest 1 billion yen to acquire JOLED's OLED technology development business, including intellectual property rights and related operations, with approximately 100 JOLED employees expected to be hired by JDIDD.

To facilitate the business transfer, JDI established JDI Design Development (JDIDD) as a merged subsidiary on May 25th. The business handover is scheduled to take place on June 30th, with the acquisition price set at 1 billion yen. Starting from July, former JOLED employees will participate in the development of JDI's OLED technology called "eLEAP."

JDI's next-generation OLED technology, eLEAP, significantly improves display brightness and lifespan. The first batch of eLEAP samples was delivered to customers in August 2022, with mass production planned to begin in 2024.

JOLED was formed in 2015 through a merger between Panasonic and Sony's OLED divisions, aiming to combine the technological strengths of both companies to develop large-sized OLED panels at a low cost. However, the company has struggled to increase its market share. In March of this year, JOLED announced bankruptcy. JDI clarified that it would not take over JOLED's loss-making product manufacturing and business sales operations.
