Kioxia Introduces High-Performance UFS Ver. 4.0 Flash Memory for 5G Mobile Apps

Kioxia Corporation, a leading provider of storage solutions, has announced the launch of its next-generation high-performance UFS Ver. 4.0 embedded flash memory storage devices. These devices, available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities, are designed for optimal performance in various next-generation mobile applications, including smartphones leveraging 5G networks.

The new UFS Ver. 4.0 devices from Kioxia feature compact packaging and offer fast internal storage transfer rates. They integrate innovative BiCS FLASH™ 3D flash memory and controllers into JEDEC standard packages. With the support of MIPI M-PHY 5.0 and UniPro 2.0 technologies, these devices provide theoretical interface speeds of up to 23.2GB/s per channel or 46.4GB/s per device. Additionally, UFS 4.0 is backward compatible with UFS 3.1.

Key features of the new UFS Ver. 4.0 devices include:

· Improved performance compared to the previous generation: 18% increase in sequential write speed, 30% increase in random write speed, and 13% increase in random read speed.

· High-Speed Link Startup Sequence (HS-LSS) support: Traditional UFS devices perform link startup at low-speed PWM-G1 (3~9MB/s), while HS-LSS enables faster execution at HS-G1 A rate (1248MB/s). This is expected to reduce link startup time by approximately 70% compared to traditional methods.

· Enhanced security: Utilizing advanced Replay Protected Memory Block (RPMB) enables faster reading and writing of secure data, such as user authentication stored in the RPMB area. The RPMB erase function ensures secure and swift disposal of data.

· Support for Extended Initialization ID (Ext-IID): Designed for use with Multi-Cycle Queuing (MCQ) on UFS 4.0 host controllers to enhance random performance.

The new UFS Ver. 4.0 devices from Kioxia are available in three capacities: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Samples of the 256GB and 512GB devices have already begun shipping this month, while the 1TB device is expected to be launched after October. It is important to note that sample specifications may differ from commercial products.
