Micron Unveils 1β DDR5 DRAM: 7200MT/s, 33% More Efficient

On October 11, Micron Technology has unveiled its latest technological breakthrough, with the introduction of cutting-edge DDR5 DRAM memory based on the highly advanced 1β process node. This pioneering product, the 16Gb LPDDR5X-8500, offers impressive speeds of up to 7200MT/s, positioning Micron as a leader in the memory technology space. A notable shift is on the horizon, as Micron has confirmed that the 1β DRAM signifies their transition away from DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) lithography to EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography for future production endeavors.

The 1β manufacturing process leverages Micron's second-generation High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) technology, resulting in significant improvements over its 1α counterpart. Notably, it offers a remarkable 35% increase in bit density for 16Gb chips, along with a 15% boost in energy efficiency. This technological leap holds great promise for the development of DDR5 and LPDDR5X memory chips, making them increasingly appealing to a wide array of applications.

The debut product manufactured using the 1β node is the 16Gb LPDDR5X-8500 memory chip. It showcases innovative features, including "Enhanced Dynamic Voltage Technology" and "Frequency-Extended Core (eDVFSC) Voltage Control Technology," which collectively serve to optimize power consumption and performance.

Micron's 1β DDR5 DRAM is already making its mark in the market, catering to data centers and PC users. Its peak speeds, clocking in at an impressive 7200MT/s, are driven by advanced high-k high-dielectric CMOS device technology. This innovation brings a substantial 50% performance enhancement compared to its predecessor, with a noteworthy 33% improvement in performance per watt.

Moreover, Micron's 1β technology encompasses a versatile range of memory solutions, including DDR5 RDIMM and MCRDIMM memory modules, integrating 16Gb, 24Gb, and 32Gb DRAM chips. The portfolio extends to include LPDDR5X, HBM3E, and GDDR7 solutions, featuring 16Gb and 24Gb DRAM chips to meet diverse industry needs.

Micron has indicated that the 16Gb LPDDR5X-8500 product is poised for large-scale production and is currently available for sampling by interested parties. With plans to make these cutting-edge products accessible through a combination of direct sales and channel partnerships, Micron ensures that its innovations reach a broad spectrum of markets and industries. This commitment underscores their role as an industry leader in memory technology, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of electronics.
