On the 13th of November 2023, SK Hynix proudly announced the official commencement of customer deliveries for its cutting-edge 16GB LPDDR5T (Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo) package product. Marking a significant leap in mobile DRAM capabilities, this product achieves an unprecedented transfer speed of 9.6 gigabits per second.
LPDDR (Low Power Double Data Rate) stands as a pivotal DRAM specification for mobile devices, prioritizing minimal power consumption through low-voltage operation. The LPDDR5X DRAM, representing the seventh generation in this series, follows a developmental sequence of 1-2-3-4-4X-5. Notably, LPDDR5T from SK Hynix represents the company's pioneering entry into this domain, further enhancing the performance of the seventh-generation LPDDR (5X) in anticipation of the official launch of the eighth-generation LPDDR6.
Following the successful development of LPDDR5T in January of the current year, SK Hynix has engaged in ongoing performance validation with global mobile application processor (AP) manufacturers, advancing the commercialization process of this groundbreaking product.
The term "Mobile AP" refers to a semiconductor chip serving as the computational nucleus in mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets. Operating as the central processing unit within a system-on-chip (SoC), this chip amalgamates computing, graphics, digital signal processing, and other functionalities into a singular unit.
SK Hynix underscores that LPDDR5T currently represents the pinnacle of memory products, delivering substantial performance enhancements for smartphones and achieving unparalleled speed levels. The company remains committed to broadening the scope of applications for this product, actively contributing to the continuous evolution of the mobile DRAM sector.
The 16GB capacity package of LPDDR5T operates within the voltage range of 1.01 to 1.12 volts, in adherence to the specifications outlined by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). Boasting a data processing speed of 77GB per second, equivalent to the transmission of 15 full high-definition (Full-HD, FHD) movies per second, this product showcases exceptional efficiency.
Recent recipients of this groundbreaking product include the global smartphone manufacturer, vivo. vivo has officially announced the incorporation of SK Hynix's latest memory package product into its flagship smartphones, X100 and X100 Pro. These smartphones will also feature MediaTek's top-tier AP platform, the Dimensity 9300, with SK Hynix confirming successful performance verification in collaboration with MediaTek in August of this year.
In the words of Park Myung-soo, Vice President of SK Hynix's DRAM Marketing, "With the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence technology, smartphones are becoming pivotal devices for deploying edge-side AI technology. Market demand for high-performance, large-capacity mobile DRAM products is on the rise."
The term "Edge-side AI" denotes artificial intelligence technology capable of performing calculations on terminal devices without the need for physically separated servers. Leveraging its technological leadership in the field of artificial intelligence storage, SK Hynix is poised to continue meeting market demands and spearheading advancements in the high-end DRAM market.
