Arm Cortex-M52: AI for Ultra-Small Endpoints

On November 23rd, Arm Holdings Limited (NASDAQ: ARM) proudly unveiled the Arm® Cortex®-M52 processor, a groundbreaking innovation meticulously crafted for Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) applications. This processor marks a significant leap forward in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Machine Learning (ML) performance, eliminating the cost overhead associated with dedicated DSP and ML accelerators. Positioned advantageously in the market, the Cortex-M52 is poised to unlock the full potential of ML within embedded computing solutions.

The Cortex-M52 introduces Arm Helium™ technology, delivering remarkable performance enhancements for DSP and ML applications in small, low-power embedded devices. Notably, it enables the deployment of computation-intensive ML inference algorithms at endpoints without the need for a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Building on the success of Helium technology in edge products on the network's remote side, the Cortex-M52 empowers Arm partners to extend Helium technology to devices with lower costs and more restricted power consumption.

This unveiling marks a transformative shift in the landscape of microcontrollers and DSP calculations for small embedded devices. The Cortex-M52 provides a streamlined migration path from Cortex-M33 and Cortex-M4, catering to diverse AIoT application needs. Its capabilities extend to enabling richer user interfaces (UI), enhanced voice and visual experiences, applicable across automotive and industrial control, predictive maintenance, and the integration of wearable sensors. Boasting scalable flexibility across performance points and configurations, the Cortex-M52 delivers DSP capabilities without the need for independent processing units, thereby optimizing chip area and cost.

Based on the Armv8.1-M architecture, the Cortex-M52 elevates the efficiency of the Cortex-M series (including Cortex-M55 and Cortex-M85) to unprecedented levels. This marks a significant milestone in introducing ML capabilities to microcontrollers, offering a choice for chip partners seeking an optimal balance between performance and cost. Developers stand to gain from the Cortex-M52's improved ML and DSP performance, with enhancements of up to 5.6 times in ML performance and up to 2.7 times in DSP performance compared to previous generations of Cortex-M.

Security takes center stage, especially during large-scale shipments, and the Cortex-M52 incorporates the latest security extensions of the Armv8.1-M architecture. This includes pointer validation, Branch Target Identification (PACBTI), and Arm TrustZone® technology, enhancing resilience against software threats. Furthermore, the Cortex-M52 accelerates the release of PSA Certified Level 2 certified chips, facilitating the next generation of PSA Certified device certification. The enhanced security features provided by Cortex-M52 assist partners in obtaining Functional Safety (FuSa) certification more efficiently, crucial for automotive and industrial control applications.

In the past, achieving the ML and DSP performance offered by the Cortex-M52 required a combination of CPU, DSP, and NPU. However, Arm's innovative approach through industry-standard and user-friendly Cortex-M product combinations streamlines AI development on a single toolchain and a single verified architecture. This ensures a consistent development flow for traditional DSP and ML workloads. Specific integrations and optimizations for leading ML frameworks guarantee developers a seamless development experience, fully harnessing the excellent performance of Cortex-M.

The Cortex-M52 seamlessly integrates with Cortex-M55 and Cortex-M85 on the software front, allowing developers to benefit from the continually evolving software and tool ecosystems around Helium. Additionally, developers can leverage free software libraries and a wealth of knowledge from the Arm partner ecosystem. To simplify and expedite IoT and embedded development processes, the Cortex-M52 is also available in the form of Arm virtual hardware, a cloud-based solution enabling software development to commence before the chip is ready.
