Q3 2023: PC GPU Shipments Jump 16.8%, Signals Recovery

In the third quarter of 2023, global shipments of PC Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) reached a notable 71.9 million units, showcasing a robust sequential growth of 16.8%, according to data from Jon Peddie Research, a reputable research institution. Concurrently, PC Central Processing Unit (CPU) shipments also experienced a significant sequential increase of 15.2%, albeit with a 5.1% year-on-year decline. This underscores a discernible resurgence in the consumer GPU market, with a sustained uptick in the prevalence of PCs equipped with discrete GPUs.

Within the PC GPU market, industry leaders NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD all registered noteworthy increases in shipment volumes, with AMD particularly standing out with a remarkable 36.6% sequential growth. Market share distribution reveals NVIDIA at 19%, Intel at 64%, and AMD at 17%. The prevailing GPU adoption rate for personal computers currently stands at 117%, reflecting a 1.6% uptick from the previous quarter, indicative of the escalating prevalence of PCs featuring discrete graphics cards. Notably, desktop PCs witnessed a substantial 37.4% surge in the adoption of discrete graphics cards.

Furthermore, during the third quarter of 2023, consumer CPU shipments demonstrated a notable composition, with laptops commanding a 69% share and desktops accounting for the remaining 31%.

The research institution emphasized that the third quarter exhibited the most robust growth in over a year, signifying a rebound in both the GPU and PC markets, which have weathered fluctuating trends. GPU shipment volumes remain a pivotal metric for gauging the dynamics of the PC market. Projections indicate a global Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for GPUs of 4.18% from 2022 to 2026, culminating in a total installed base of 5 billion units by the close of 2026. Over the ensuing five years, the anticipated penetration rate of discrete graphics cards (GPUs) in personal computers is set to reach 30%.
