2024 AI PC Launch: Qualcomm, Acer & ASUS Lead

The second half of 2024 is poised for significant advancements in AI-driven PCs, spearheaded by Qualcomm’s latest processors built on Arm architecture (Windows on Arm, WoA). This initial wave targets Microsoft's next-generation AI PC, "Copilot+PC." Leading Taiwanese brands Acer (2353) and ASUS (2357) are set to launch their models starting June 18, marking the beginning of the peak PC season.

These innovative AI PCs feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series mobile platform, which includes a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of 45 trillion operations per second. This performance outpaces all existing x86 architecture processors and offers superior energy efficiency. Arm’s CEO, Rene Haas, has set an ambitious goal to capture over 50% of the Windows PC market within five years, anticipating strong growth for Arm-based AI PC processors.

A strategic advantage for Qualcomm is the robust support from Microsoft, positioning Qualcomm to capitalize on early opportunities with the Copilot+PC architecture. Before Intel and AMD release their new x86 processors in Q3 and Q4, Qualcomm enjoys a significant head start.

Prominent brands such as ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP (8424), and Lenovo are swiftly moving to embrace the AI PC market, with new products expected to be available starting June 18. This launch sets the stage for intense market competition in the latter half of the year.

Acer has announced the Swift AI laptop, featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite mobile platform. This laptop highlights the AI application capabilities of Microsoft's Copilot+PC and boasts extended battery life.

Regarding the competition between Qualcomm’s Arm-based processors and x86 processors, Acer Chairman Jason Chen stated that Acer will offer products featuring both types of processors. Qualcomm's market share is expected to rise from a low base, with future growth dependent on market acceptance. Chen noted that Acer has previously used Qualcomm chips in Chromebooks, and this shift is driven by the rise of the Copilot+PC.

ASUS has introduced the Vivobook S 15 and ProArt PZ13 2-in-1 laptops, both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite mobile platform. The ProArt series, designed for creators, is one of the few products in the industry to use Qualcomm's new processors for creative tasks. ASUS aims to become a leading AI PC manufacturer, with Co-CEO Samson Hu predicting that AI PCs will cost $100 to $150 more than traditional PCs. Overall, ASUS is optimistic about the positive impact of AI PCs on the industry’s profit structure.
