LG Display, the South Korean display technology giant, announced on Sunday its successful development of the world's first stretchable display with an industry-leading elongation rate of up to 50%.
The new prototype, a 12-inch display, can be stretched to an impressive 18 inches while maintaining a 100ppi resolution and full RGB color. This represents a significant advancement from the 20% stretchability demonstrated in 2022, now reaching 50%.
LG Display attributes this innovation to several cutting-edge technologies, including the use of specialized silicon material substrates found in contact lenses, a 40-micron microLED light source, and a newly designed wiring structure. These advancements have significantly enhanced the display's stretchability, flexibility, and durability. The display can be stretched over 10,000 times while retaining clear image quality, even in extreme environments.
The display's potential applications are vast, offering a thin, flexible form factor that can adhere to irregular surfaces such as clothing or skin. This opens up new possibilities for various applications across industries.
Additionally, LG Display showcased several concept applications at the event, including automotive panels that can stretch into raised shapes and wearable displays attached to firefighter uniforms. These innovations demonstrate the potential of stretchable displays in both everyday and specialized environments.
