TSMC 2nm Chip Yield Over 60%, Mass Production in 2025

Sources indicate that TSMC, the world's largest foundry, will commence mass production of its advanced 2nm chips in 2025. TSMC has decided to proceed with the plan after achieving a test production yield of over 60% for its 2nm process.

With higher-than-expected yields, TSMC plans to start mass production at its new Kaohsiung facility next year. The company will also transfer its 2nm test production from the Hsinchu Science Park in northern Taiwan to the Kaohsiung site.

The two new 2nm wafer fabs under construction in the Nanzi Science Park in Kaohsiung are expected to begin operations in the first and third quarters of next year, respectively.

TSMC Chairman Mark Liu expressed surprise at the strong demand for 2nm chips, stating, "We never imagined it would be this big." The company is actively preparing its production facilities to meet customer demand.

Currently, the most advanced mass production technology is the 3nm process. Industry experts generally predict that TSMC will lead the market in the 2nm space.

Additionally, reports suggest that TSMC's capital expenditures (facility investments) for 2025 are expected to reach $38 billion, surpassing the previous record set in 2022 with $36.29 billion. The company is also planning to build 10 new plants, both in Taiwan and internationally, with details of these investments to be disclosed during TSMC's fourth-quarter earnings call later this year.
