Infineon Technologies has commenced the construction of a state-of-the-art, highly automated backend assembly plant in the Bang Pakong District of southern Bangkok, Thailand. This facility is designed to manufacture power modules, which are integral to various applications, including industrial systems and renewable energy.
The first phase of the plant is scheduled to begin operations in early 2026, although the company has not yet disclosed the expected production capacity or technology level. Further capacity expansion will be managed flexibly based on market demand.
This project has received support from the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI). The advanced facility will play a crucial role in Infineon's diverse manufacturing network as global efforts to decarbonize and protect the climate continue to drive demand for power modules.
"As decarbonization and digitalization emerge as powerful structural growth drivers for the semiconductor industry, we are establishing this cutting-edge backend facility in Thailand to meet future customer needs and enhance supply chain resilience. This investment is a key step in our strategy to further diversify our manufacturing footprint and optimize costs while aligning with the expansion of front-end production capacity," said Rutger Wijburg, Chief Operating Officer of Infineon. "Our new backend facility is designed for efficiency, resilience, and high quality, ensuring that we can reliably deliver high-quality products to our customers."
The new plant will contribute to the development of Thailand's semiconductor ecosystem, strategically located in the heart of Southeast Asia, with access to critical components and materials within the supply chain. A comprehensive training and education program has already been established to enhance capabilities in artificial intelligence, digitalization, and automation, with the first group of Thai engineers having successfully completed the program at other Infineon facilities.
In December 2024, Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck emphasized the company's focus on localizing production of commodity-grade products in China, further strengthening its relationships with customers in the region.
