Samsung Electro-Mechanics to Supply Silicon Capacitors for Galaxy Z Flip7 Series

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is set to mass-produce silicon capacitors for Samsung Electronics' upcoming foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip7—a significant milestone in the company's strategic expansion into the silicon capacitor market. Traditionally dominated by Japanese industry leaders such as Murata, the silicon capacitor sector is poised for increased competition as Samsung Electro-Mechanics leverages this opportunity to grow its market share.

According to industry insiders on July 2, Samsung Electro-Mechanics' silicon capacitors will be integrated into the new Galaxy foldable model, scheduled for release on July 9. Samsung Electronics' Mobile eXperience (MX) division plans to manufacture approximately 2.2 million units of the Flip7 and its cost-effective variant, the Z Flip7 FE, between July and September. Reports indicate that Samsung Electro-Mechanics will collaborate with Japanese companies to provide a substantial volume of silicon capacitors, though specific client details remain confidential.

Silicon capacitors, produced using silicon wafers, function similarly to “dams” that regulate current flow within semiconductor chips or substrates. They are typically paired with multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) due to their complementary electrical characteristics. Compared to MLCCs, silicon capacitors offer a thinner and lighter form factor with faster current control, making them ideal for high-performance semiconductor devices and substrates.

Positioning silicon capacitors as a key future growth driver, Samsung Electro-Mechanics began delivering samples to clients in 2024 and launched mass production in the first quarter of 2025 for Marvell's AI accelerator platform products. Marvell ranks sixth globally in system semiconductor design. At CES 2025 in Las Vegas this January, Samsung Electro-Mechanics President Jang Deok-hyun announced plans to initiate full-scale production this year, targeting sales exceeding 100 billion KRW within one to two years.

The company introduced its “Mi-RAE (Future) Project” early last year, outlining five emerging business areas: silicon capacitors, all-solid-state batteries, automotive electronic hybrid lenses, glass substrates, and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC). With the successful ramp-up of silicon capacitor mass production this year, Samsung Electro-Mechanics' other advanced technology sectors are expected to gain momentum in the near future.
