Taiwan-based global semiconductor silicon wafer manufacturer GlobalWafers has announced plans to build a 300mm silicon fab in Sherman, Texas, the first of its kind in the U.S. in more than 20 years. The factory will start construction in the second half of the year and is expected to start production in 2025.
The 300mm greenfield investment is in line with the company's TWD 100 billion ($3.38 billion) brownfield and greenfield expansion plan announced on February 6, 2022, GlobalWafers said, adding that Texas The new investment could ultimately support up to 1,500 jobs and output through multiple stages of equipment installation to 1.2 million wafers per month, in line with market demand.
Most of the 300mm silicon wafers needed for semiconductor factories are currently made in Asia, forcing the U.S. semiconductor industry to rely heavily on imported silicon wafers, the company said, adding that the investment would be the first new U.S. investment in more than two years. Silicon wafer factory. Decades and closing critical semiconductor supply chain gaps.
Doris Hsu, Chairman and CEO of GlobalWafers said: "Due to global chip shortages and ongoing geopolitical concerns, GlobalWafers is taking this opportunity to build a state-of-the-art 300-mm silicon fab by building an advanced node. GlobalWafers USA (GWA) Instead of importing wafers from Asia, wafers will be produced and supplied locally, resulting in a significant carbon footprint reduction in the current global ESG wave, benefiting both customers and GWA.”
"GlobalWafers' announcement today is critical to rebuilding the domestic semiconductor supply chain, strengthening our economy and national security, and creating U.S. manufacturing jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “The Biden administration has worked tirelessly to make the U.S. an attractive place to manufacture semiconductors and their components, and is excited that GlobalWafers has chosen Texas for their new factory. But we are in a make-or-break moment for expanding domestic semiconductor production .Semiconductor companies need to make investment decisions by the fall to meet the huge growth in demand for chips. GlobalWafers pledged to the U.S. as they believe Congress will pass a bipartisan innovation bill in the coming weeks.
If all goes well, the GlobalWafers Texas facility is expected to be operational by 2025. Once the target capacity is reached, it can theoretically meet basically all the demand for 300mm wafers in the US chip supply chain.
