South Korea's second-largest mobile operator KT has invested 30 billion won ($23 million) in South Korea's homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) chip startup Rebellions this week, according to media reports. This is also KT's second strategic investment in the AI field after establishing a partnership with South Korean AI infrastructure startup Moreh last year.
Rebellions was established in September 2020 and has an experienced and highly educated team. According to the official website, more than one-third of the members have a doctorate degree, and there are also experienced technical talents from Samsung and SK Hynix, who also cooperate with professionals in various fields such as Intel, ARM, and Samsung America.
KT said it plans to fully enter the AI semiconductor field, which is currently dominated globally by U.S. chipmaker Nvidia Corp, through a partnership with two startups.
Through the cooperation, KT plans to build a large-scale GPU farm within the year and integrate proprietary AI semiconductors developed using ultra-large-scale AI computing technology.
