On Saturday, July 17th, local time in the United States, chip giant Intel sent a signal that it hoped that people would not have high expectations for its Arc GPU.
Intel is about to launch a limited-edition Arc A750 GPU, but the company's latest test data shows that its performance is only average.
It's important to stress, though, that the A750 should be one of Intel's top graphics processors, as the "7" in front of its name suggests. Intel's naming convention is that the Arc 5 and Arc 3 sit below the Arc 7, which represent midrange and entry-level performance, respectively.
Ryan Shrout, Intel's chief performance strategist, launches Cyberpunk 2077 on a PC with an A750 chip installed, and instead of showing his gaming skills, he jumps directly to the performance page . Short said the game uses a "high-quality" preset with a resolution of 2560x1440 and an average frame rate of "just under" 60 frames per second.
Short next showed benchmarks that revealed how the Arc A750 performed relative to the entry-level Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. In games like Cyberpunk 2077, F1 2021, Control, Frontier 3, and Fortnite, the Intel Arc A750 outperformed a standard RTX 3060 by 1.06 to 1.15 times.
However, Short pointed out that "Arc's performance won't be as strong in all games", adding that "Arc's capabilities can only be fully utilized with the right game support and software engineering".
Obviously, it's impossible to judge how well this GPU will actually perform until we experience it firsthand, but the test results provided by Intel aren't exactly exciting. The Arc A750 GPU is slated to launch late this summer, but Intel has already released the A370M and A350M mobile GPUs in several different laptops, as well as the entry-level Arc A380 desktop GPU (expected to hit global markets later this year).
Intel's new GPU lineup hasn't looked that great so far. Reviews have shown that the addition of the Intel A370M actually makes the 16-inch HP Spectre x360 laptop worse than it was with the RTX 3050 before, while PC gaming YouTube channel Gamer Nexus reports that the A380's performance is choppy.
Bugs and other glitches are inevitable in any new product, and as many reviewers have pointed out, users may be reluctant to buy something that requires diving into uncharted territory, especially with GPUs becoming so readily available and Nvidia 40 series of graphics cards coming soon.
