UMC 14nm eHV FinFET Platform Boosts OLED Innovation

According to industry announcement on May 14, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has introduced a new 14nm embedded High-Voltage (eHV) FinFET technology platform designed for display driver integrated circuits (DDICs), marking a significant advancement in its high-voltage process roadmap for next-generation display applications. The company has also begun providing Process Design Kits (PDKs) to customers to support early design-in and product development. The new process has been successfully validated at UMC’s Fab 12A, targeting improvements in power efficiency, performance, and chip area reduction to enable more advanced display technologies.

Compared with UMC’s current mass-production 22nm eHV solution, the new 14nm eHV FinFET platform delivers up to 40% lower power consumption and reduces chip area by approximately 35%. These improvements translate into longer battery life and enable smaller, thinner display driver module designs, which are particularly suitable for high-end smartphones and foldable OLED devices. The platform also leverages FinFET transistor architecture instead of traditional planar transistors, enhancing electrical performance through optimized I/O design and higher driving speed, while maintaining strong signal integrity required for high-resolution and high-refresh-rate displays.

In addition, the upgraded medium-voltage devices feature reduced line-width spacing and a wider operating voltage range, providing greater flexibility for advanced driver circuit design. This enables display IC engineers to achieve more efficient integration across increasingly complex display systems.

According to UMC’s Deputy Vice President of R&D, Hsu Shih-Chieh, display technologies continue to evolve toward higher resolution, faster refresh rates, and lower power consumption. He emphasized that the launch of the 14nm eHV platform represents a major milestone as it is the first time FinFET technology has been introduced into UMC’s display driver IC process portfolio. As customer requirements become more sophisticated, UMC aims to support innovation with scalable and production-ready semiconductor solutions.

UMC has long maintained a strong position in the OLED display driver IC segment, and is currently recognized as one of the leading foundries offering advanced 22nm-class display driver solutions. With its established eHV process expertise, extensive IP portfolio, and comprehensive design support capabilities, UMC continues to provide a broad high-voltage process platform ranging from 0.6µm to 14nm, supporting the full spectrum of display industry applications and enabling the development of next-generation display technologies.
