Amkor and AMD Expand US Packaging Partnership

According to Amkor Technology, the company announced on May 21 that it is working with AMD to provide advanced chip packaging services, highlighting the growing importance of advanced packaging in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Earlier this week, Amkor revealed that it had secured an additional 67 acres of land adjacent to its existing 104-acre campus in Arizona. The company plans to build a new manufacturing facility at the site, with production expected to begin in 2028.

As advanced packaging increasingly becomes a critical bottleneck in semiconductor manufacturing, Amkor is accelerating its expansion into higher-end packaging technologies. Historically focused on less complex chip packaging, the company is now moving deeper into advanced semiconductor packaging solutions to support next-generation AI and high-performance computing applications.

Amkor is also collaborating with TSMC at its Arizona facility, where it will utilize selected TSMC technologies to deliver mature packaging processes for mutual customers. The partnership reflects the broader industry trend of strengthening semiconductor manufacturing ecosystems within the United States.

The company had previously disclosed that its Arizona operations would support packaging-related services for NVIDIA and Apple. Amkor CEO Kevin Engel confirmed in an interview that AMD has also become one of the company’s strategic partners in this initiative.

“We are moving further up the value chain,” Engel said. “Our integration with customers is becoming deeper, which is reshaping the industry landscape and allowing us to capture greater value from our services.”

During its investor event on Thursday, Amkor projected revenue between $8.5 billion and $9.5 billion by 2028, with a long-term target of reaching $11 billion in annual sales by 2030.

However, according to LSEG data, the midpoint of Amkor’s 2028 revenue forecast, estimated at $9 billion, came in slightly below analysts’ expectations of $9.1 billion. Following the announcement, the company’s shares declined 2.6%.
