LG Display to Invest KRW 3 Trillion in Next-Gen OLED Technology

According to LG Display, the company plans to invest KRW 3 trillion in next-generation OLED technology development and production infrastructure after being selected as a beneficiary of South Korea’s second round of large-scale projects under the National Growth Fund’s “OLED Technology Leadership” program, announced on July 30.

Under the program, LG Display will receive KRW 1.5 trillion in long-term, low-interest financing from the fund and invest an additional KRW 1.5 trillion from its own resources. The investment will focus on advanced equipment and manufacturing infrastructure required for next-generation premium OLED technologies.

LG Display emphasized that the investment is not aimed at simply expanding production capacity to increase shipment volumes. Instead, the company will prioritize differentiated technologies, including lower power consumption and thinner panel designs, as part of its strategy to strengthen profitability through a greater focus on high-value-added OLED products.

The long-term financing is expected to reduce the financial burden associated with large-scale capital expenditures, allowing LG Display to accelerate technology investments while maintaining financial stability.

The company has identified tandem OLED and Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) OLED technologies as key development areas. Tandem OLED technology uses multiple stacked light-emitting layers within a display panel to improve brightness, extend lifespan, and enhance energy efficiency. Meanwhile, LG Display is expanding OLED applications beyond smartphones into televisions, IT products, automotive displays, and gaming monitors.

LG Display aims to maintain its technological advantage over Chinese competitors, particularly in the premium display market. The company noted that competition in the global display industry is increasingly shifting from production scale and pricing advantages toward technological differentiation.

As Chinese manufacturers continue to expand the supply of cost-competitive OLED panels, LG Display plans to strengthen advanced products and manufacturing technologies that are difficult for competitors to replicate, reinforcing its position in the high-end OLED market.
