
According to Wccftech, Chinese DRAM manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has made significant progress in the development of LPDDR6 memory chips and is approaching the final stage of research and development (R&D) verification, bringing the company one step closer to mass production. The breakthrough marks a major advancement for China’s domestic DRAM technology and could help CXMT gain a stronger position in the global DRAM market, which is currently dominated by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron.
Reports indicate that CXMT’s first LPDDR6 memory product has largely completed the R&D verification phase, a critical milestone before entering mass production. The introduction process for LPDDR memory typically involves four key stages: single-chip validation, R&D verification, pilot production validation, and full-scale mass production.
During the R&D verification stage, manufacturers conduct comprehensive tests covering compatibility, system stability, performance and power consumption, as well as mechanical reliability. These evaluations are designed to identify potential issues and ensure the chip’s design meets performance and reliability requirements before commercial production.
The specifications of CXMT’s first LPDDR6 product have also been revealed. The memory is designed to achieve a maximum data rate of 12,800 Mbps (12.8 Gbps), with a base operating speed of 10,667 Mbps (10.7 Gbps) when paired with a system-on-chip (SoC). The chip features a 16Gb single-die capacity and a 1,295-ball package-on-package (PoP) design. Compared with the previous-generation LPDDR5X standard, the new memory is expected to deliver improvements in low-power operation and system reliability.
Among major DRAM manufacturers, SK hynix currently appears to be leading the LPDDR6 development race. The South Korean memory company recently announced plans to begin mass production of LPDDR6 memory in the second half of 2026. Its LPDDR6 chips will be based on its sixth-generation 10nm-class (1c) process technology, targeting peak speeds of up to 14.4 Gbps, around 33% higher than LPDDR5X, while reducing power consumption by more than 20%. Xiaomi is expected to become one of the first customers to adopt SK hynix’s LPDDR6 solutions.
Samsung Electronics and Micron have also been developing LPDDR6 products, but both companies have increasingly shifted their strategic focus toward higher-margin markets such as HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and server DRAM driven by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. This shift could create an opportunity for CXMT to strengthen its position in the mobile DRAM market during a period of relatively limited competition.
Previously, CXMT’s DRAM products had already entered the supply chains of several major technology companies, including Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Transsion, Honor, Alibaba Cloud, Tencent, ByteDance, and Lenovo.
Beyond its technology progress, CXMT has recently attracted attention due to potential cooperation with Apple. According to multiple reports, Apple has been seeking approval from the U.S. government to purchase CXMT’s DRAM chips for products sold in the Chinese market.
The potential partnership comes as Apple faces growing supply chain pressure. With the rapid growth of AI applications, Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have redirected significant memory capacity toward HBM production, tightening supplies of conventional DRAM and pushing prices higher. This situation has weakened Apple’s bargaining position and contributed to rising costs for products such as Mac computers and iPads.
Integrating CXMT into its memory supply chain could provide Apple with an additional source of DRAM supply while also strengthening its negotiating position with the three leading memory companies. However, some U.S. lawmakers have urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to reconsider the plan, citing national security concerns. Despite the pressure, Apple continues discussions with government officials regarding the potential procurement arrangement.
CXMT’s rapid progress in technology development and market expansion has drawn significant industry attention. The company has advanced from LPDDR5 technology to a near-production-ready LPDDR6 solution in less than three years, supported by substantial investment in research and development. CXMT reported R&D spending of RMB 9.593 billion in 2025, providing a foundation for its accelerated technology roadmap.
According to market research data, CXMT’s global DRAM market share reached approximately 7.67% based on DRAM revenue in the fourth quarter of 2025, making it the world’s fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer. Some industry forecasts suggest that as new production facilities come online, CXMT’s share of global DRAM production capacity could rise to around 17% by the end of 2028.
