According to The Information, citing people familiar with the matter, NVIDIA is in discussions with SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, over a potential investment of up to $3 billion. SB Energy is currently developing a large-scale data center project in Ohio for OpenAI.
The proposed investment is part of broader negotiations between NVIDIA, OpenAI, and SB Energy regarding financing support for the planned Ohio AI data center campus, which could require around $100 billion in credit backing. Under the current discussions, NVIDIA may invest half of the $3 billion when an agreement for the Ohio project is finalized, while the remaining portion could be invested as part of SB Energy’s planned initial public offering (IPO).
NVIDIA and SB Energy have not commented on the matter.
Founded in 2019, SB Energy is developing multiple data center campuses to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI computing infrastructure. The company is reportedly aiming to go public as early as next month and could raise at least $5 billion through its IPO. Previously backed by OpenAI, SB Energy has been focused on building large-scale power and data center infrastructure to support advanced AI workloads.
Meanwhile, NVIDIA has adjusted its plans to support the proposed OpenAI data center project in Ohio. The company’s initial financial backing is now expected to be below $120 billion, compared with the previously discussed figure of $250 billion.
The potential investment highlights NVIDIA’s continued expansion into AI infrastructure, as demand for high-performance computing, data centers, and advanced semiconductor technologies accelerates worldwide.
