
According to reports, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is building a new quantum chip manufacturing facility in Copenhagen as the global race to develop quantum computing technology intensifies.
The facility will focus on the design and manufacturing of core processing units for quantum computers and will be operated by Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, according to the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Peter Krogstrup, CEO of Quantum Foundry Copenhagen, said the foundation plans to invest approximately DKK 400 million (about $62 million) in the project. The funding will support research and development, facility construction, and preparations for production. Additional investment will be required to establish the production line, which is expected to begin operations in around two years.
“The competition in quantum computing is extremely intense. Everyone wants to gain an early advantage and participate in the development of this highly complex technology. Therefore, we need to stay ahead,” Krogstrup said.
Investment in quantum computing is accelerating as governments and companies around the world increase their focus on the emerging technology. Quantum computers are expected to outperform conventional computing systems in certain specialized applications. The industry is also benefiting from growing public-sector support, including a $2 billion quantum computing investment commitment announced by the Trump administration this year.
Drug discovery is among the areas where quantum computing could potentially deliver significant benefits by accelerating complex molecular simulations and computational research.
To date, the Novo Nordisk Foundation has committed more than SEK 2.9 billion to quantum technology initiatives. Its plans include building a quantum computer in Copenhagen by 2034 and acquiring a quantum computer developed by Microsoft.
