Nexperia, Tata Electronics Partner on Chipmaking in India

According to Nexperia, the Dutch semiconductor manufacturer has announced a broad cooperation agreement with India-based Tata Electronics to manufacture and package semiconductor devices in India.

Under the agreement, Tata Electronics will manufacture a range of Nexperia’s power control chips at its semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, India. Tata Electronics is investing approximately $11 billion in the facility as part of its efforts to develop a domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

The two companies will also conduct chip testing and assembly at Tata Electronics’ packaging facility in Jagiroad. In addition, they plan to collaborate on the development of future semiconductor technologies.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Randhir Thakur, CEO of Tata Electronics, said the comprehensive cooperation represents an important step toward building a globally competitive semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India with an integrated supply chain.

Nexperia primarily manufactures relatively simple semiconductor devices that are widely used in automotive and consumer electronics applications. Its product portfolio includes power management and control devices designed for a broad range of electronic systems.

The cooperation has reportedly been approved by Nexperia’s current management board.
