2026 Cold Dew Arrives!

On October 8, 2026, at 2:29 PM Beijing time, the sun reaches a celestial longitude of 195 degrees, marking the arrival of Cold Dew, or Hanlu, the 17th of the 24 solar terms. Cold Dew follows the Autumn Equinox and comes before Frost’s Descent, signaling that autumn is gradually giving way to colder weather. The name reflects an ancient observation that dew becomes increasingly cold during this period and may soon approach the point of freezing.

Cold Dew has its roots in the traditional Chinese agricultural calendar and the long-term observation of seasonal changes. According to the ancient text Collection of the Seventy-Two Seasonal Subdivisions, Cold Dew describes a period when “the dew becomes cold and is about to condense.” Traditionally, this solar term was associated with the deepening of autumn, cooler temperatures, migrating wild geese, and the blooming of chrysanthemums. People also developed various customs around this season, including enjoying chrysanthemums, drinking chrysanthemum wine, climbing mountains, appreciating autumn scenery, and eating traditional flower cakes, especially around the Double Ninth Festival.

While the natural world enters a cooler season, the global semiconductor industry has remained highly active over the past few days. On October 6, Applied Materials announced a collaboration with Intel to accelerate the development of next-generation semiconductor technologies for AI computing. The two companies will focus on advanced transistors, interconnects, and packaging technologies, including Intel’s Foveros 3D-stacking technology, with the goal of shortening the path from research and development to high-volume manufacturing.

At the same time, major semiconductor companies are continuing to benefit from strong AI-related demand. On October 7, Samsung Electronics projected third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, or about $80 billion, with strong memory-chip demand driven by AI infrastructure playing a major role. On October 8, TSMC also reported record third-quarter revenue of approximately $46.7 billion, up 50% year over year, as demand for AI applications continued to support the semiconductor market.

As Cold Dew reminds us of the gradual transition from warmth to cold, the semiconductor industry is also moving through a period of rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence. Technology continues to advance at an extraordinary pace, but the changing seasons remain a reminder to slow down, appreciate nature, and prepare for the colder days ahead. During Cold Dew, people traditionally pay attention to keeping warm, maintaining a balanced diet, and enjoying the clear autumn scenery as the season moves deeper into late autumn.
