Synopsys and OpenAI Launch GPT-Synopsys for AI Chip Design

According to a recent announcement, Synopsys (NASDAQ: SNPS) and OpenAI have established a strategic partnership to transform semiconductor design by combining OpenAI’s advanced AI capabilities with Synopsys’ industry-leading electronic design automation (EDA) tools and agentic AI technologies. Under a multi-year agreement, the two companies will jointly develop a specialized model called GPT-Synopsys, optimized to perform semiconductor design workflows using Synopsys EDA tools. The agreement also includes a revenue-sharing arrangement and joint go-to-market initiatives to deliver GPT-Synopsys to customers worldwide.

Agentic AI is increasingly capable of connecting general-purpose AI models with EDA tools to execute chip design workflows. The next step is to enable advanced AI models to use these tools with greater expertise, interpret their outputs, and iteratively refine designs in a manner similar to experienced engineers. By integrating AI reasoning with professional EDA software, the partnership aims to help engineers explore more design alternatives, optimize power, performance, and area (PPA), and accelerate the development of increasingly complex semiconductor devices.

Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, said the company is using leading-edge technologies to improve the systems that power AI. Through its collaboration with Synopsys, OpenAI is extending this work into semiconductor design, helping developers explore more design possibilities and build production-ready chips faster. Better chip designs, he noted, can contribute to better AI systems and broader benefits for users.

Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys, emphasized that the future of semiconductor engineering requires significant improvements in design productivity without compromising PPA targets or first-pass silicon success. The agreement is intended to give more companies access to Synopsys’ advanced design capabilities and the engineering tools needed to bring increasingly complex chips into production. By combining advanced AI with established semiconductor design technologies, the companies aim to accelerate development while maintaining the rigor and reliability required for successful manufacturing.

GPT-Synopsys Advances AI-Native Semiconductor Design

GPT-Synopsys combines OpenAI’s advanced models with Synopsys’ EDA technologies and semiconductor engineering expertise. The specialized model is designed to reason about chip design and verification tasks and interact directly with Synopsys tools. Engineers will be able to assign objectives such as PPA optimization, timing closure, and verification closure to AI agents. These agents can invoke relevant tools, interpret results, make design changes, and repeat the process until validated results are obtained for engineer review.

GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and support integration with customers’ existing agent frameworks. It will also integrate with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot, the company’s agentic AI platform. Synopsys has already begun early technical collaborations with leading semiconductor customers.

The jointly delivered offering will combine computing resources, AI models, and the necessary licenses while protecting customer-specific design data. GPT-Synopsys will incorporate enterprise-grade security, governance, and access controls. Customer data will not be used to train the models and will be encrypted both at rest and in transit. Customers will also be able to manage their data through configurable retention policies, auditing capabilities, and access permissions.

The partnership represents a step toward integrating advanced AI directly into semiconductor engineering workflows. By combining specialized AI models with professional EDA tools, OpenAI and Synopsys aim to improve chip design efficiency, accelerate verification and optimization, and help engineering teams develop increasingly sophisticated semiconductor products.
