According to statements from executives at Intel and Broadcom, rising capital costs and financing constraints could become major obstacles to the continued expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, potentially outweighing shortages of chips, memory, or electricity.
Capital Costs Emerge as a Key Constraint on AI Infrastructure Growth
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan highlighted the issue on October 12 at the DBS Asian Insights Conference in Singapore. He said capital could become the biggest constraint as companies race to build infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly complex AI models. Although demand for AI computing infrastructure continues to exceed supply, access to funding could determine how quickly the industry expands its capacity.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan expressed similar concerns, pointing to rising capital requirements and financing costs as significant challenges. He also noted that, over the longer term, investors will focus on whether companies making substantial investments in AI can generate sufficient returns.
The comments from both semiconductor executives highlight a shift in the challenges facing the AI industry. Beyond the availability of semiconductors, memory components, and power infrastructure, financing capacity and investment returns are becoming increasingly important factors. As spending on AI data centers and computing infrastructure continues to grow, the cost of capital and the ability to generate sustainable returns could play a decisive role in determining the pace of future expansion.
