DIY Soldering Helping Stand with Double Clamps

If you are interested in a DIY soldering helping stand, you might want to check out this article.

Here is what the finished project looks like. It uses two flexible hoses, so it is a double-clamp stand.

The main body is made from the top cover of an 80G parallel-port hard drive, which is made of stainless steel.

If you happen to have a broken pair of over-ear headphones, you can remove the flexible gooseneck tube from the microphone. This tube can serve as the flexible hose for your stand. It has a diameter of 3.6 mm. You can secure the hose by forcing the original hard drive cover screws into it.

The clips come from a stainless steel clothes-drying rack. Simply lift the spring inside each clip and insert it into the hole in the hose to secure the clip in place. The fastening is reasonably firm.

Here is what the assembled stand looks like. You can use the upper clips to hold wires, PCBs, or other items that need soldering. The shallow box at the bottom can temporarily hold small components and other parts.

The materials for this soldering stand are simple, and the project is very easy to make. You can put it together in just a few minutes. The main drawback is that the flexible hoses are a little thin, so they cannot support heavy objects. The heaviest item they can hold is probably the programmer shown in Figure 1. However, the stand should work well for most common tasks. Give it a try if you are interested!
