DIY USB Touch Lamp Modification with a Lithium Battery

If you happen to have a small USB touch lamp and want to convert it into a bedside lamp powered by a lithium battery, you might find that the built-in circuit board already has a reserved spot for a 4054 charging chip when you open it up. This saves you from adding a separate 4056 charging module. Simply install the missing components, add a lithium battery, and the modification is complete.

This is what the small lamp looked like before the modification.

First, disassemble the small lamp.

After examining the circuit, you can see that it appears to use an 8022W touch-control IC, which provides three brightness levels by default. The circuit board also has a reserved position for a 4054 five-pin charging IC.

Now, let's start the modification.

Install a 4054 chip, then disconnect the lamp's USB power supply and add a 2K charging resistor for the 4054. The charging current is approximately 360 mA, which is sufficient to keep the battery charging temperature down and help extend the chip's service life. Next, modify the 8022W touch-control IC's operating mode to a single brightness level, so you can turn the lamp on with one touch and turn it off with another. Install an 1800 mAh battery. In actual testing, the battery delivered 1500 mAh when discharged at 1 A down to 3 V, which is pretty good.

There is no need to add a protection board. The 4054 chip provides charging protection, and you can simply recharge the battery when the lamp starts to dim.
