It is reported that TSMC will delay mass production of 3-nanometer chips for another three months, and will fully put into production next year

On October 19, according to Korean media BusinessKorea, TSMC said in a recent conference call that its 3-nanometer chips will start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year and have a high yield rate.

 

The report pointed out that Taiwanese media reported that TSMC will start mass production of 3-nanometer chips around the end of September. This means that it has again delayed mass production of 3nm chips by three months.

 

The company said the delay was mainly due to customer demand exceeding supply capacity due to equipment delivery issues. However, the 3-nanometer production line will be fully operational next year.

 

TSMC started mass production of the 7nm process and 5nm process in the second quarter of 2018 and the second quarter of 2020 respectively, that is, it will migrate to the next generation of new foundry technology levels every two years.

 

But the company needs more time to roll out the 3-nanometer process. TSMC had said on a conference call in the second quarter of last year that it would take 3 to 4 months longer to migrate to the 3-nanometer process than to roll out the 5-nanometer process.

 

The report believes that under such circumstances, Samsung Electronics' successful mass production of 3-nanometer chips has attracted the attention of the world's semiconductor industry. Samsung officially announced mass production of 3-nanometer chips on June 30, and shipped its first mass-produced 3-nanometer chips on July 25.
