On November 9, according to the Taiwanese media "Economic Daily", foreign media reported that TSMC was evaluating an additional US$12 billion investment in the US 3nm fab, and the news attracted attention from all walks of life. In this regard, TSMC issued relevant clarifications this evening.
TSMC's public relations office said that the Arizona wafer fab currently under construction includes a portion of the building that may be used for the second phase of the plant, which will improve cost-effectiveness by utilizing the resources constructed at the same time in the first phase. The building will allow the company to maintain flexibility for future expansion.
"However, so far, TSMC has not yet confirmed the plan for the second phase of the Arizona fab. Given the strong customer demand for TSMC's advanced process, we will evaluate future plans in terms of operational efficiency and cost economics." TSMC said .
It is understood that in May 2020, TSMC announced that it will invest $12 billion to build a new 5nm fab in Arizona, USA. Construction of the plant started in June 2021 and is expected to start production in 2024.
Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal reported that TSMC plans to announce in the next few months that it will build an advanced semiconductor factory north of Phoenix, Arizona, adjacent to another chip factory it announced in 2020, and the scale of the investment is huge. It is expected to be about the same as the plant.
