The US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) recently released the "2022 US Semiconductor Industry Status Report", stating that although 2022 will be a year of historic significance, the semiconductor industry continues to face major challenges, and the industry is known for its cyclical nature. Demand is not expected to rebound until the second half of 2023.
SIA mentioned that the previous chip shortage warned the importance of semiconductors, and 2022 will be a very successful and important year for the industry, because semiconductors have a greater impact on the world than in the past.
However, SIA mentioned that the chip shortage will gradually ease in 2022, the growth of global semiconductor sales will slow down sharply in the second half of this year, and the industrial utilization rate will decline. According to the Gartner report, the 8-inch fab has declined significantly. In the fourth quarter, the utilization rate dropped below 85%.
In addition, SIA also pointed out that Sino-US tensions continue to have an impact on the global supply chain, which continues to lead to a surge in US government control over chip sales to China. In addition, the attention of U.S. government and business leaders has now turned to implementing the CHIPS program to enhance the dynamics of the U.S. semiconductor industry and improve U.S. global competitiveness. However, the industry still faces significant challenges, including developing a skilled workforce, responding to global competition for U.S. leadership in chip design, and maintaining access to global markets and supply chains.
