Arm: Will not change the existing business model RISC-V brings healthy competition

On December 13, according to Taiwan media TechNews, Drew Henry, Executive Vice President of Arm Strategy and Marketing, said at a media sharing meeting in Taiwan, China that in the future, Arm architecture solutions will be provided in accordance with customer needs on the basis of compliance with the latest international standards. It will not change the existing business model.

Drew Henry said that with the sharp increase in demand for data centers and the rise of emerging applications such as autonomous driving, AI, and the Internet of Things, the market has higher and higher requirements for computing power, which has also challenged Moore's Law. Nowadays, it is very difficult to continue Moore's Law with a single technology, so Arm uses IP, software, etc. to enable Moore's Law to continue in different fields and maximize computing power.

When talking about the booming RISC-V industry, Henry said that Arm is looking forward to this kind of healthy competition, and mutual competition also makes the industry more aware of what is important.

Regarding TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou's statement that "globalization and free trade are almost dead", Henry pointed out that the rules of the game in the global semiconductor industry have changed, but it does not affect Arm's operations. Because although the rules have changed, the computing problem still exists; and Arm is an IP supplier with customers in the United States, China, Europe, etc. In the future, it will provide Arm architecture solutions based on the latest international standards and according to customer needs. will change the existing business model.

It is worth mentioning that, according to SemiAnalysis, Qualcomm’s previous litigation documents show that Arm may change its licensing model and IP terms. SoCs based on Arm architecture CPUs after 2024 cannot use external GPUs, NPUs or ISPs. This time, what Henry mentioned at the media conference in Taiwan, China, "will not change the existing business model" may be a response.
