IBM 14 said it has reached a cooperation with Japanese chipmaker Rapidus on the most advanced chip manufacturing.
It is reported that Rapidus is advancing the production of 2nm chips. Rapidus recently signed a memorandum of cooperation with IMEC, Europe's largest chip research and development institution, showing that the company is advancing the research and development and production of advanced semiconductor technologies. Rapidus plans to mass-produce 2nm process chips by 2025, and mass-produce improved 2nm+ ultra-fine semiconductors by 2027.
Rapidus was not only jointly invested and established by eight major Japanese companies, but also received heavy financial support from the Japanese government, which shows its significance to Japanese chip manufacturing. It is understood that Rapidus was established in August this year. Toyota, Sony, Softbank, Kioxia, Nippon Denso, NEC, and Nippon Telecom Telephone contributed 1 billion yen, and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank contributed 300 million yen. In November this year, the Japanese government announced that it would provide Rapidus with 70 billion yen in funding.
