TSMC's 2nm new factory or delay

According to Taiwan media Economic Daily, Taiwan's "China Science and Technology Administration" revealed on the 28th that due to the delay in the review of the urban planning of the Taichung City Government, and the fact that the new head of the Metropolitan Development Bureau has not yet taken office, TSMC's next-generation 2nm Zhongke new plant land acquisition schedule It is feared that the original schedule will be postponed to the third season in May next year.

It is reported that TSMC held a 3nm mass production and factory expansion ceremony at Nanke Tainan Park today. At the same time, Taiwanese media reported that the land for the next-generation 2nm factory area is facing delays. TSMC responded quickly yesterday. No change.

On December 5, Taiwanese media pointed out that Taiwan Zhongke promoted the second phase of the expansion plan of Taichung Park, which may be related to the progress of TSMC's 2nm plant. In September, Taiwan Media Central News Agency pointed out that TSMC plans to conduct risky trial production of the 2nm process in 2024 and mass production in 2025. If there is not enough land for Zhuke, it will expand its 2nm production capacity in Taichung.

According to TSMC, compared with N3E, the 2nm process will increase the speed by 10% to 15% at the same power, or reduce the power consumption by 25% to 30% at the same speed. The legal person is worried that once the land for TSMC's new 2nm plant cannot be obtained as scheduled, the subsequent 2nm production schedule may also be affected, which will impact the competitiveness of Taiwan's semiconductor industry chain.

Zhongke pointed out that judging from the current progress of environmental impact assessment and metropolitan review, the environmental impact assessment and urban planning changes will be completed in March next year, and it should be too late for land handover in May, and it will not be until the third quarter of next year at the earliest. On the other hand, Zhongke announced yesterday that Taiwan's first "Zero Waste Center" has entered the stage of factory construction. Under the leadership of TSMC, five manufacturers have settled in. The total investment of the whole project has reached NT$7.4 billion. It is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Operation, full operation in 2025.
