Following the latest clashes between Russia and Ukraine, Japan on Friday tightened sanctions on Russia, adding a range of products to its export ban list and freezing the assets of some Russian officials and entities.
The decision came after Russia launched a missile attack on Ukraine on Thursday that killed at least 11 people, according to Reuters. Germany and the United States have previously pledged to provide tanks to help Ukraine counter any new Russian offensive.
"Contributing to efforts to secure international peace in light of the situation around Ukraine, Japan will join other major countries in imposing an export ban," Japan's METI said in a press release.
Among the new sanctions, Japan will ban shipments to 49 Russian organizations from Feb. 3 of items that could be used to bolster its military capabilities.
The products will include products ranging from high-pressure water cannons, gas exploration equipment and semiconductor equipment to vaccines, X-ray inspection equipment, explosives and robots, the ministry noted.
Separately, Japan will freeze the assets of three Russian entities and 22 individuals, including aircraft company JSC Irkut Corp, surface-to-air missile maker MMZ Avangard, deputy defense minister Mikhail Mizintsev and justice minister Konstantin Chuychenko, as well as 14 individuals with " Pro-Moscow individuals involved in the annexation of "southeast Ukraine."
In this regard, Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Japan has been in the camp of "unfriendly" countries from the very beginning, which will have an incalculable impact on the already "unfriendly" relationship with Japan.
