Infineon to Acquire GaN Systems for $830 Million, Expanding Its Power Semiconductor Portfolio

German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies announced today its plan to acquire GaN Systems for $830 million, as the company seeks to expand its portfolio of power semiconductor products. GaN Systems, based in Ottawa, Canada, specializes in GaN power semiconductors, offering a wide range of transistor products that meet the demands of various industries, including consumer electronics, data center servers, renewable energy systems, industrial motors, and automotive electronics. Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck sees the acquisition as an opportunity to pave the way for more energy-efficient and decarbonization solutions in various applications, such as mobile charging, data center power, residential solar inverters, and electric vehicle onboard chargers. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval. GaN is becoming a critical material in power semiconductors due to its higher power density and efficiency. Infineon previously announced its plan to invest over €2 billion in a new front-end wafer fab in Malaysia, with the first wafers expected to be produced in the second half of 2024, as it doubles down on the wide bandgap field. Electronic components distributors may want to consider adding GaN Systems' transistor products to your inventory to meet the growing demand for more energy-efficient and high-performance power semiconductors.
