According to a report by Electronic Times, global silicon wafer manufacturer, GlobalWafers, is building a new 12-inch silicon wafer factory in Texas, USA, with plans to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2025. The new factory, which is still under construction, has already secured a Long-Term Agreement (LTA) contract from customers.
GlobalWafers Chairman, Xu Xiulan, stated that the factory is expected to provide samples to customers in the second half of 2024, with mass production to follow in the first quarter of 2025. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new factory took place in December 2022.
Xu Xiulan also mentioned that with the encouragement of the federal and state governments in the United States, GlobalWafers America will be able to reduce its operating costs, strengthen its financial structure, and generate appropriate profit margins.
While some of GlobalWafers' customer orders have been delayed due to the recent market downturn, Xu Xiulan said that the overall capacity utilization rate will recover in the second half of this year.
GlobalWafers previously announced plans to more than double its capital expenditures in 2023 to accelerate the expansion of its wafer production capacity, particularly in SiC and GaN epitaxial wafers, in order to meet strong customer demand. It's important to keep an eye on these developments as they could potentially affect supply chain dynamics and the availability of certain components in the future.
