Samsung Display Unveils Revolutionary OLED Technologies at Display Week 2023

According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Display has introduced two new innovative technologies that can reshape the OLED industry's landscape for the electronic components industry. These technologies are the Rollable Flex OLED display and the Sensor OLED display with embedded sensors.

Samsung Display showcased these cutting-edge advancements at the recent Display Week 2023 event held in Los Angeles, where they unveiled a range of next-generation products specifically designed for portable devices such as tablets and laptops.

The Rollable Flex OLED screen is a breakthrough in enhancing the portability of tablets and laptops. It can significantly expand the vertical screen length from the previous 49 millimeters to an impressive 254.4 millimeters, over five times the original size. While the current maximum scalability of foldable and slideable form factors is limited to 2-3 times, the rollable design of this OLED device surpasses those limitations by smoothly rolling and unrolling the display around an O-shaped axis, similar to rolling out a piece of paper.

Additionally, Samsung Display presented a new concept phone called Flex In & Out, which introduces a foldable mechanism capable of folding both inward and outward, allowing for 360-degree operation. Unlike inward-folding designs that require a separate external panel to access information when folded, the Flex In & Out concept overcomes this limitation, suggesting the potential for lighter and thinner foldable smartphones.

Furthermore, Samsung introduced a groundbreaking technology called the Sensor OLED display. This display can recognize fingerprints at any location on the screen while simultaneously monitoring cardiovascular health. Unlike typical smartphones that have a fingerprint sensor installed as a separate module beneath the OLED panel, Samsung Display has integrated an Organic Photodiode (OPD) sensor directly into the system. This integration expands the fingerprint recognition area to cover the entire panel, enabling users to customize the recognition area according to their needs.

Moreover, the integrated OPD panel can measure the user's heart rate and blood pressure with a simple touch of the finger, marking the first time Samsung Display has introduced a panel technology that can simultaneously sense fingerprint and biometric information.
