MediaTek and NVIDIA Team Up for Arm Chip Development

According to Taiwan's media outlet Taibao, leading smartphone chip manufacturer MediaTek is forming an alliance with NVIDIA to jointly develop electronic chips. MediaTek's CEO, Cai Lixing, and NVIDIA's CEO, Huang Renxun, will make an appearance at the upcoming COMPUTEX 2023 event to announce their collaboration on Windows on Arm PC chips and other related ventures. Through this partnership, NVIDIA aims to reenter the Arm architecture PC market and enter the long-desired smartphone chip market, while MediaTek will leverage NVIDIA's assistance to compete with Qualcomm in the Arm chip sector.

The news indicates that the focus of NVIDIA and MediaTek's collaboration lies in the development of Arm architecture chips for Windows PCs, integrating NVIDIA's GPU into MediaTek's 5G SoC processors.

Insiders revealed that NVIDIA initiated this partnership, showcasing the company's ambition to venture into Arm architecture PC chips and smartphone chips once again. The Arm architecture PC market is currently dominated by Apple and Qualcomm, who hold significant market share through their self-developed chips, resulting in minimal competition. Therefore, the collaboration between MediaTek and NVIDIA will inject vitality into this market. If this partnership proceeds successfully, it will mark NVIDIA's reentry into the smartphone market after a ten-year hiatus since the Tegra 2/3 chips in 2012-2013.
