According to a report by Reuters on May 29th, Arm has unveiled new chip technology for mobile devices. MediaTek has announced its plans to incorporate this technology into their next-generation products, stating that the new chips will enhance the performance of future smartphones.
MediaTek is a supplier of mid-range to low-end smartphone chips and has been making efforts to enter the high-end smartphone chip market, which has been dominated by competitors like Qualcomm.
Arm builds its hardware blueprint by selling chip designs. Recently, at the Computex conference, Arm introduced the Immortalis-G720 GPU for video and image processing, as well as the Cortex-X4, which will serve as the core design for mobile devices, acting as the "brain" of the devices.
Arm claims that both of these new designs offer a 15% performance boost compared to previous generations, while the power consumption of the Cortex-X4 has been reduced by 40%. Arm also announced that it has started mass production of the Cortex-X4 at TSMC using their N3E process technology, which is a groundbreaking achievement in the industry.
When asked if mass production means Arm is manufacturing chips for sale instead of its long-standing business model of providing chip designs to manufacturers, Chris Bergey, the General Manager of Arm's Client Line of Business, clarified that this step is part of helping customers test new manufacturing technologies. Arm does not engage in chip sales as that is not their role.
Previously, there were reports from foreign media suggesting that Arm is developing its own chips to showcase its design capabilities.
